Women and Technology in the 1950’s
By 1910 less than one percent of patents issued in the United States were issued to a woman (Bedi, 2005). Since then there has been an increase with the number closer to ten percent by 2005. Considering the social aspect of women in the 1950’s it should be no surprise that there were not a whole lot of women inventing items at the time. The average women encountered technology in the home doing her “wifely” duties. The dishwasher, invented by a woman, became a popular invention at the time and of course she used her refrigerator and stove in order to prepare meals. Women during this time were simply more likely to use technology, most of them invented be men, than they were to invent technology themselves.
